Mining has always been a significant part of Australia’s industrial scene and a great contributor to the economy. A large number of immigrants to this country were motivated by mining booms – people came to Australia in search of gold or other precious minerals. Then came the coal and iron ore mining ventures and more recently oil and gas has been the focus of huge development.
Nowadays, Australia’s private infrastructure projects are mainly based on three areas: mining, oil and gas. Accessing these often remote sites often involved damaging the natural environment leading to them. Roadways gouged out of forests often led to erosion, and the transport of heavy machinery needed for mining sites exacerbated the environmental damage caused.
But as the years passed, companies became more and more aware of the fact that their activities might interfere and damage the surrounding environment. As a result, in order to protect it as much as possible, they sought innovative solutions.
One example is the Supa Mats provided by Smart Track. Made of 100% recycled polyethylene plastic of high density and with a thickness of 1.27 cm, the Supa Mats are also known as bog mats. A single piece has an area of 2.4 x 1.2 m and weighs approximately 33 kg. The Supa Mats system is incredibly user-friendly and can be used whenever a piece of machinery needs to have quick access to a certain area.
Assembling Supa Mats
Assembling Supa Mats is simple – you lay each mat under the proposed vehicle track and afterwards, when the task is completed, simply remove it. One of the great benefits of these mats is that they have cylinders on both sides and, as a consequence, the open spaces between them create pathways to release the mud and the litter from the area. Typically, a truck comes in contact with about 36 cylinders at one time, so the clearing effect of the area is extremely intense. Every cylinder pairs with another one at the opposite part, creating a traction force between the ground and the mat.
As for the applicability, Supa Mats can be used in a variety of contexts such as:
- temporary roads or parking lots
- outdoor special events
- creation and maintenance of landscape
- construction sites
- resorts and parks.
